How Many Have Passed?

Roman Amphitheater in Palermo, Sicily

I took this photo of an ancient gate in the Roman amphitheater in Palermo, Sicily, because I’m fascinated by the thought of how many people have passed through it over the thousands of years since the construction of the stone arch. If one looks closely, the marks are still visible from the tools that carved the stone.
What were those people like? Did most of the people frequenting the attraction speak Greek or Latin in ancient times? Standing before this gate made me imagine the possibility of walking through it and going back to a time when Palermo would have been something very different than it is today.
